What will the first session look like?
Prior to you showing up to your first session, I will email you all of the necessary paperwork so you will not have to deal with filling out paperwork during your scheduled time. Having that done, will give us more time to get to know one another. The first session I will ask you questions such as “what are your goals for therapy”, “what would you like to change”, “how long has the problem been going on” etc.?
Do I have to answer every question you ask?
Absolutely not, you are free to pass on anything I ask you. The first session is always pretty laid back, unless you choose otherwise.
How long are the sessions?
Typical therapy sessions are about 50 minutes.
I am a very private person. How do I know you are not going to tell anyone about what we talk about?
I am bound by law to protect your confidentiality. The only exceptions to this are related to child or elder abuse, a threat to harm another person or if you are in danger of self harm. If insurance is involved, we can discuss what I would have to share with insurance companies.
Are you going to make me take medication?
As a licensed clinical social worker, I cannot prescribe any medication. However, if after we assess the situation and we TOGETHER feel medication may be helpful, I have several psychiatrists that I can put you in touch with.
Do I really need therapy?
The fact that you are reading this now, probably means the time is right. I truly believe that everyone can benefit from therapy! Therapy is most beneficial when you feel connected to and comfortable with your therapist. You may have to try out a few different clinicians before feeling like it is a good fit (and that is ok!).
